Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. It all began in Salem, New Hampshire, that’s when a police officer made a traffic stop. Robert Zygarowski from Pennsylvania was very uncooperative and the result was that Officer Adam Pearson had to use his stun gun to try to subdue Robert. The next thing that happened was likely a complete shock to the officer because Robert pulled out the stun gun barbs and attacked the officer. Then, Robert was able to get back into his car and drive away from the scene of the traffic stop. Of course, that was not the end of the story! Officer Pearson chased after Robert until the man’s car had a tire blow out. Officer Pearson ordered Robert and two others out of the car, but the officer was again surprised as the man charged toward him and was able to escape in the officer’s vehicle. When more officers arrived they began to chase after the man once again, however, they found the stolen police vehicle a short distance away. Not long afterwards the man was seen entering a gas station threatening the clerk who called police. Police converged on the area and Robert was found on a nearby trail where he once again resisted arrest but was finally taken into custody. (WMUR.com 06.21.14) 

Let’s see what are some of the charges Robert Zygarowski may face? Some of the possible charges are: disobeying lawful orders, three counts of resisting arrest and assault, reckless driving, theft of a motor vehicle, and probably many others. It appears likely that the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol as well. Robert has dug himself a hole filled with some serious law violations which will result in prison time. The first law of holes is attributed to a British politician Denis Healey and also to Will Rogers. That law states: “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.” Robert just kept on digging. He could have stopped at the first traffic stop and simply been arrested for a possible under the influence charge, but Robert kept on digging going deeper and deeper into trouble. 

God, through the apostle Paul, lists a bunch of things that we as Christians should avoid doing. Don’t lie, don’t hold onto your anger, don’t steal, don’t let bad words come out of your mouth, don’t do this and don’t do that. Why? Because when you persist in doing those things, you are digging yourself into a hole spiritually. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” What’s the first rule of holes? This is a test…and the answer is: stop digging! Because if there is one thing you don’t want to do it is to “grieve the Holy Spirit of God.”
